Mumbai
Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, is a city of 24 million people surrounded by some incredible British architecture. Skyscrapers reach to the sky because land is at such a premium and the best way to build is up. Do not miss Mahatma Gandhi’s home which has been turned into a museum showcasing and honoring his life.
Again, India’s tolerance for all people is reflected in the many temples, churches and even 3 synagogues for the approximate 2000-3000 Jews.
Tuk Tuks are relegated to the outskirts of the city so the traffic, although heavy, is much less frenetic than Delhi.
The Victoria Railway Station services 3 to 4 million passengers a day and reduces Grand Central to a country depot. And do not miss the world’s largest laundry service. Lines of laundry stretch as far as the eye can see as residents of Mumbai send out their laundry daily to be washed and returned the next day upon picking up new laundry.
Mangalore
Mangalore is a city of approximately 700,000 residents that boasts a very high literacy rate. It is another busy Indian city that reflects a culture that ranges from the daily fish and vegetable market to the very upscale private home that we visited. Hinduism is the major religion practiced here but Islam and Christianity also have a fair number of followers. Education is highly praised and this is the home of Mangalore University.
Again, banana chips, cashews and many kinds of nuts are produced in this region.
Agra - Taj Mahal
The four plus hour ride from Delhi to Agra is filled with traffic. Cars, motor bikes and tuk tuk taxis weave in and out. At times it feels as if you are at an amusement park driving bumper cars.
Fortunately, the Taj Mahal awaits! One cannot satisfactorily describe this beauty and grandeur that man created. It truly is a world wonder!
If possible, visit it at dawn to see the magnificent spectacle of the Taj Mahal as it changes colors depending upon the sun’s reflection as it rises.
And if you have the time, try to visit baby Taj nearby!
Agra is all about the Taj Mahal! Agra is about a four hour ride from Delhi and one must stop at Baby Taj upon reaching the city. If at all possible, try to view this world wonder during the day as well as at dawn. This spectacle presents itself differently depending upon the light. You cannot visit India without viewing this incredible monument.
Delhi
Delhi, capital of India with about 30 million people, is replete with monuments to the past dynasties that ruled it. From strolling through Khan Market with its many shops and stalls to Humayun’s Tomb and India Gate, Delhi offers many tourist sights. Mosques abound and a visit to Gandhi’s memorial offer many spiritual reflections. Old Delhi is a labyrinth of narrow streets filled with shops, pedestrians, tuk tuk taxis, motor bikes and trishaws. The cacophony of horns blaring and traffic jockeying and congestion is a jarring but enjoyable experience.
Thanks for sharing your wonderful trips with me.
Much love to you both.
Keep on tripping. lol.
